Antique Buffet Makeover- Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint

This antique buffet holds a special place in my heart because it came from my grandmother. When I was little, I remember this piece in her home with a large and fascinating Christmas village spread across the top. I found it fitting to share the makeover of this piece because of that special memory from the holidays.

Let me start out by saying I love all the detailing and the beautiful wood work of this piece. Some may not agree with my decision to paint over it (and I would agree because I love the before too) BUT there were a lot of dings and wear showing through.

When I envisioned this bedroom space in our Flat, I wanted it to be rich in history and have grayscale tones. I chose to try out Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Typewriter for this project. This was the first time using Marian’s paint and I’m in LOVE. For real though. I guess I didn’t realize how “chalky” the finish would be BUT that’s what I wanted. I wanted the finish to look worn and muted.

I ended up giving about 2 coats of paint on the buffet and when dry, I lightly sanded the entire piece down to leave a smooth finish. On the legs and small detailing, I sanded more to allow the wood to pop through to really highlight those fine details.

Layering the antique mirrors with my large Amish Country canvas- it was the perfect layered look. I snagged this large glass lamp from the thrift store which completed my buffet top.

I loved the before but I also equally love the painted version. My favorite part you ask? I love the black muted tones mixed with the warm, rich tones of the mirrors- very elegant, yet bold. I highly recommend MMS milk paint if you’re looking to paint a project (this project was not sponsored by MMS).

Hugs, Alyssa
